One-half Cent Enriches Our Schools
While just a fraction of the city’s sales tax, the Education Fund revenues collected each year translate into millions. In 2007 the Education Fund Board awarded $3.4 million in gifts to district schools. The funding requests for next year are currently under consideration by the commissions and the Fund Board.
Among the board’s high profile gifts are the 6th grade wing addition to the middle school and the centralized Citrix computer system, which streamlines complex programming and reduces maintenance costs. The system allows parents, students and teachers to connect online from anywhere in the world.
The Three Commissions
The Fund Board’s three commissions—Education Excellence, Technology and Capital—consider requests for funds and recommend expenditures to the Education Fund Board.
Requests for gifts are submitted to the school principal or department director. Parents, citizens or staff can also directly approach the appropriate commission with requests.
While the EFB operates independently of the school board, all gifts are compatible with district goals and can be accepted or declined by the Steamboat Springs School Board.
