Commission

Grants are awarded to public schools and nonprofits in Routt County through a competitive grant process managed by the Education Fund Grant Commission (Commission) and approved by the EFB. There are 11 voting members on the Commission: nine residents of Steamboat Springs, one resident of Hayden, and one resident of South Routt County. Commission members are approved by the EFB and serve three-year terms.

  • The Commission functions as the direct interface with Routt County school districts and community groups who are seeking grants from the Steamboat Springs Education Fund.
  • All requests for funding from SSEF are initiated through the Commission.
  • The Commission hears requests for expenditures that support academics and student achievement and for funds to be used for technology hardware, software and training as well as the construction of facilities that support the educational mission of the districts.
  • The Commission examines requests in detail, votes on which requests to send forward to the Fund Board, and prioritizes according to available funding.

The Steamboat Springs Education Fund (SSEF) is a nonprofit, independent corporation that administers the proceeds of the half-cent sales tax—five cents on a $10 purchase. The half-cent city sales tax was originally approved by Steamboat voters in 1993 to fund “public K-12 educational purposes.” The tax was extended by voter approval in three subsequent elections. In 2009, voters extended the tax and expanded the purpose to share a portion of the proceeds of the tax with other Routt County public schools. Since 1993, more than $67M has been granted directly for public K-12 education in Routt County.
